Sanjoy Ganguly: Theatre as an Act of Love
17th April 2025
'Theatre as an act of love essential for politics'
Sanjoy Ganguly is the founder of Jana Sanskriti, an activist theatre company based outside Kolkata which uses the Theatre of the Oppressed and particularly Forum Theatre, to stimulate important conversations and to catalyse change in rural communities around West Bengal. The company’s roots are in Marxism, but the work has adapted local story-telling and theatrical traditions with strong elements of dance and ritualised movement, to tell important stories of enduring oppressions. The work has particularly focussed on women’s rights and the education of girls. The company is probably the largest movement to emerge from TO methodologies, its followers (including regular audiences and local groups replicating the core company’s performances) numbering many thousands. In recent years the company has hosted a significant TO festival, Muktadhara.
‘The workshop will focus on how we can create observers of our reality through exercise and games to understand what we already know. ‘ Sanjoy Ganguly.
The workshop will be followed by a dialogue between old friends Adrian Jackson and Sanjoy, about the connections and differences between their work, in the 30+ years their companies the companies with which they are associated have existed. There will time at the end for questions and reflections on the day.
